I finally have some time to sit down and blog a little bit. Jeepers Creepers...
So first things first, I want to apologize to everyone I didn't see when I was in San Antonio. I was only there for 7 days and those 7 days went by so fast, before I knew it, it was Wednesday night and I was packing to leave the next day. So I'm so sorry I didn't see y'all. PLUS to add to it, I didn't have internet access. Who knew that people would secure their networks in my Mom's hood? Anyway, the little connection I did have was so unreliable that I could stay on for only like 2 minutes. Forgiveness all around, please...
Second, my Famils are the best! They just rule the world. How awesome it was to just hang out with my mom for 3 weeks? She was with me in Califas for 2 weeks and then for a week in Tejas. It was great. I miss her so much. I wish she was closer.
See, just as I sat down to blog I hear my kids coming up the drive ready for dinner. Luckily I have the nuggets in the microwave and the strawberries cut and ready to go. Shh, don't tell anyone that I make my kids microwave food when I don't have time to cook. Tomorrow they will have pizza with their Dad because I have a meeting. SO, that's that with that!
What did we do while in Texas?
We arrived on Thursday, late and starving of course. Got the rental van and then we were off to my Mama's house. Ate a late dinner and the kids went to sleep, I hung out with the Muth. She's the best.
Woke up early on Friday morning and the Muth, the Kid Sis, the Twinkles and I got ready for a full day. We went to have breakfast at Jim's on Hildebrand and San Pedro then it was off to the Zoo! Had to show the kids a real zoo. They have only been to the lame Oakland Zoo. We had a great time! It was a blast. The kids loved it. Jake has always really really wanted to see a rhino and he was just so excited to finally see one in person! After the zoo we got on the train! It was so fun! I remember it from back in the day but this time it was just so much better than it ever has been. Must have been having my own kiddos with me, experiencing it for the first time! We got home exhausted but fulfilled! It was a fabulous day.
Saturday was flea market day. We got a later start than I wanted but still, it was so much fun. We bought so much crap it wasn't even funny. Did I mention the kids $5 cowboy hats? No? Ah, well, yes, there are cowboy hats! Spent all day at there and came home with a HUGE watermelon. AND the kids had their first raspas. Coconut for Jake and Strawberry for Kate. Good time was had by all. Spurs game afterward. Holy Shit Spurs, double overtime!
Sunday was Famils day. We woke up early, ate breakfast at Jim's again, then went to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The kids went to meet Grandpa Texas for the first time and we also saw my Tio Louie. I hadn't seen his stone. It was sad but the kids had a good time. Does that make sense? When we got home we had a bbq with all the famils present. My Tia, my cousins, my sister and John, My old friend Jenn and even my brother and his family were there. It was great to see everyone. I made me realy miss Texas more. I miss them all. ROCK BAND! After everyone left we played Rock Band. "Mommy we love you but we don't want to share!" was what the kids told me when it was my turn to sing. John, Jenn and Jake and Katy srsly played Blitzkrieg Bop 3.489 million times. It was AWESOME! If anyone in my hood has it, you should invite me over. I will bring Pepsi and Doritos and we will have a good time, okay? I srsly can sing the hell out of Celebrity Skin.
Monday was Fiesta day. We took the kids to the Mercado and they had a good time. I need to mention the humongous turkey leg that they ate. They LOVED it and of course my hands smelled like turkey for the rest of the day. Gross, yeh, I know. Then I had dinner with my beautiful friend Sylvia. I met her boy. He's nice.
Tuesday was Selena Day. We went to Corpus Christi to take Katy to go see Selena's grave and her statue. She LOVED it and we even got a video of her doing her Selena moves. It was awesome. So sad when I really really sit downa nd think about it. She was so young. Then we ate lunch at WHATABURGER by the Bay. Oh yeh, it was de-licious! BEST BURGER EVER! Then we went to go see the Selena statue downtown and we were thwarted by some really tanned old man. Apparently the statue was closed because they were getting ready for a boat show and the statue was right smack dab in the middle of it all. So I paid some girl twenty bucks to drive us by it in her little Landry's golf cart. Then we went to the beach for a walk along the sea but we ended up getting in and getting wet. The kids were baptised in the Gulf at last. The gulf coast water taste sweet as wine... Got home late and watched the Spurs game.
Wednesday I took the rental van back and started packing and getting ready to go the next day. I was already sad that I would be leaving my mom and that I didn't get to see some very very important people.
Thursday, went to the airport early, hung out a bit before we had to go in and get to our gate. It was SAT to LAX to OAK. LONG FLIGHT! Got home, kissed the husb and I got right to work on the newsletter and on my consulting gig...
It's been non-stop ever since...
What old wives’ tale have you discovered to be totally untrue?
Submitted by Jack Yan.
What is weird is just last night I was working out an entry in my head to talk about old wives tales because I was doing something that one is "not suppose to do". I was eating hot soup and drinking something cold. It is said that if you do this you will get sick when the heat and the cold mix in your belly. NOT TRUE! I didn't get sick.
There are more but I didn't write my thoughts down yesterday so now I'm all out. I will think of something.
Don't go to sleep with your hair wet, it will cause a sty. Not True! I have done this many time and it hasn't happened.
If a bird gets hold of your hair and uses it in it's nest, you'll get a headache. I don't think that this is true but hey, I also always have a headache.
Don't chew gum late at night because you'll be chewing the bones of the dead. Uh, what? More than likely, okay yeah, NOT TRUE!
Cut your hair on June 24th (the Feast day of St. John the Baptist) and your hair will grow faster. Never tried this one but I seriously doubt it.
Don't play cards late at night because the devil will get you. Hmm, not true. My cousins and I tested this theory.
If a cat is bathing himself, you will get a visitor from the direction he's facing. This has actually never happened to me, especially since my cats were constantly bathing themselves.
Rub a cat's tail on a sty and it will go away. I have tried this and the sty has gone away but I think it has everything to do with timing and not my cat's tail.
If you put lemon juice in a seashell it will turn creamy and you can use it on blemishes. Never tried this one! But it's probably not true.
If you drop a spoon on the floor a woman will visit soon. If you drop a fork a man will visit. If you drop a knife an authority figure is coming. This has never ever come true for me and I am always dropping something!
If the broom falls by itself, then company is coming. Nah, my broom has fallen and I have had no company.
If you accidentally sweep over someone's feet with a broom, their partner will die. My husband and I are always sweeping over each others feet. NOT TRUE!
If you have an inflamed ingrown (tacotillo) kind of cyst on your skin, put a piece of ham or bacon on it and it will grow a head and will burst. This one goes back to my great-grandma. There are claims that this one is true but I have never tried it. Ewww!
Always have rosemary, rue and reseda for good luck and protection. This one might be true, we always kept it at home when I was growing up and we didn't have any real bad luck.
Rub an egg in the sign of the cross all over the body to remove the evil eye. Crack it in a glass of water and put 3 broom stick or toothpick crosses. If the egg "cooks" it will tell you who gave the evil eye. This was something that was always done to us when we were adorable little children. We were so cute it caused people to stare at us and not touch us and thus giving us "ojo". My mom had to cure us. I think it worked.
If your ears are itchy or red that means someone is talking about you. If you gently bite your tongue, it will make them bite theirs and they will stop talking about you. I haven't tried the second part of this one but I have heard about the first part. Hmmm, I'm gonna bite my tongue right now!
If you're pregnant during an eclipse you should wear a key around your neck. It protects the baby from being eaten by the moon. A baby eating moon, I think not!
If your baby has hiccups, put red lint or thread on the forehead and the hiccups will go away. NOT TRUE!
What experience or moment in your life have you learned the most from?
Submitted by AngieK.
Becoming a mother is the single moment I have learned the most from. First, I have learned patience. I'm still learning but I have become a lot more patient since. I learned that there is a love so deep in my heart that I am willing to kill for them. I am not softer because I became a mother (people often say that you become softer) I am harder because I have never loved two people more to be willing to move mountains for.
So I was one of those mothers who let my children use pacifiers. I figured they wouldn't like it very much or for very long so let them have it for as long as they needed it. 3 years later we have finally taken the "foofies" away from them. It actually wasn't that hard, knock on wood.
On Friday (the day of their actual birthday) we took the kids to the beach. We have started a tradition of taking the kids to the beach on their birthday. We had a great time. We were only there for a couple of hours and we came home. Then we packed up the bag with foofs and put them in the mail box so that the "Foofie Fairy" could show up and take them to other babies who really need them. They kissed the foofies and said thank you and hugged the bag. It was very emotional. They were not ready to part with their friends...
After a couple of hours the foofie fairy showed up and put a small teddy bear, a balloon and a card in the mailbox for each of them. They were so excited. They named their bears pink foof and blue foof. The card talked about how brave they were and that the babies that received their foofies were very happy.
The first night there was some crying but nothing that we couldn't handle. We hugged them extra, read them an extra book and it was a night. Last night was nothing. They didn't even ask for them. They just went to sleep. We will see how tonight will be.
My babies are becoming big kids right before my eyes. No more foofies.
